ABOUT
Clare Adam is a visual artist living in Roberts Creek. She is originally from the UK and studied fine art in South Africa. In London she sold work through the Guardian Newspaper Art for Sale magazine and through a variety of galleries. Her agent – Image By Design – reproduced some of her flower paintings for commercial use. In Vancouver she sold work through Petley Jones and exhibited at the Ferry Building in West Vancouver. She taught art to adults and children in her studio for four years, and is now enjoying Saltwater Studios, where she is rediscovering the joy of drawing and considering teaching again.

WHAT I DO

I start a large drawing as I would a doodle, by having no expectations of the outcome. After selecting a random object – a discarded coffee cup, or by extracting an image from my imagination – a flying fish, this allows image-association to flow. I can escape, ask questions and explore the absurd.

I draw and paint landscapes, still lifes and portraits, not to copy but to find a relationship, an energetic connection. I don’t restrict myself to a particular medium. Experimentation, allowing for mistakes and leaving the work alone for an extended period are essential.

Currently, I’m experimenting with abstraction by using the elements and principles of art. On completion, I question how the work makes me feel. Some pieces I choose to keep, and others I paint over.
